Bhutan celebrated a historic milestone today as the first international flight departed from Gelephu International Airport, officially opening the nation’s southern gateway to regional air travel. The inaugural Gelephu–Kolkata–Gelephu service, operated by Drukair, marks the beginning of Gelephu’s emergence as Bhutan’s newest international aviation hub. Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay officiated the launch ceremony in Gelephu, underscoring the significance of this achievement for the country’s connectivity and future development. The Director of DoT, Damcho Rinzin, said that the launch of the Gelephu-Kolkata-Gelephu route is a significant step forward in Bhutan’s vision for regional development and connectivity. “This connection will not only make travel more convenient for guests but also provide meaningful opportunities for local communities in southern Bhutan,” he said. Following the inaugural flight, Drukair will begin operating two scheduled commercial flights per week on the route starting December 12, 2025. The schedule is as follows:
