Thimphu Dzong

“Let our Bhutan travel experts craft your unforgettable Bhutan experience.”

Tashichho Dzong is one of the most important and impressive landmarks in Thimphu, Bhutan. Its name means “Fortress of the Glorious Religion”, reflecting its central role in both the spiritual and political life of the country.

Location

It is located on the northern edge of Thimphu city, along the Wang Chhu (Thimphu River), set against a beautiful mountain backdrop.

Key Facts

Originally built in 1641 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the unifier of Bhutan, Tashichho Dzong has been reconstructed and renovated several times due to fire and earthquake damage. The present structure was largely rebuilt in the 1960s under the command of the Third King, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck.

Why It's Special

Tashichho Dzong is not just a monument — it is a living institution where monks chant, officials work, and national ceremonies take place. During the annual Thimphu Tshechu, the dzong becomes a vibrant cultural center with mask dances and rituals.
